Rankings

Summary from UHSAA bylaws (Article Five, Section 1-F). Rankings drive assignment expectations, not guarantees.

Each member has two distinctions per class (varsity and sub-varsity): high school boys and high school girls. Exceptions may apply when assigners adjust for need or circumstances.

Varsity class

• 100 — Referee
• 200 — Umpire 1
• 300 — Umpire 2, junior-varsity referee

Sub-varsity class

• 400 — Transitional: JV referee, varsity umpire 2
• 500 — Junior-varsity referee
• 600 — Junior-varsity umpire & sophomore referee
• 700 — Sophomore referee
• 800 — Sophomore umpire (new officials start at 800)

Chapter boards may adjust an official's rank between 400 and 800 on either the men's or women's side. The UBOA (quad board) may adjust between 300 and 100.
