Improvement & video
Reviewing your games on video helps you improve. Be honest, take notes, rewatch key clips, and do not use video only to validate calls.
- Hudl — mostly varsity; some JV games appear.
- YouTube — many schools live-stream JV and varsity games.
- KSL Live Stream — often postseason; may include some varsity during the season.
Positioning reminders (3-person)
Short cues for self-scout. Terminology matches common high-school mechanics.
Lead
- Transition: Sprint T to new L; shoulders and head stay connected to players.
- Setup: Legal position based on ball location; close down or wide-out as the play demands.
- Rotation (3-person): Mirror the ball; get ball side; rotate on time with clear reasons.
- Primary: Officiate defenders in your primary; pick up secondary defenders; strong-side rebounding.
- Eyes: Off ball unless in primary; pick up new matchups (post, cutters) in rotation.
Center
- Transition: Brief hold after scores or changes of possession; help press coverage; responsible for about two-thirds of players; sideline-to-sideline.
- Setup: Reliable spot near the free-throw line extended; shoulders parallel to the sideline; from top to bottom of the lane circle.
- Rotation: Move to open looks; stay with ball until lead accepts the play.
- Primary: Mostly off ball; high post, screens, movement at the high elbow; weak-side rebounding; cover where lead cannot.
- Eyes: Officiate off-ball when appropriate; track matchups; body language should show engagement; move on the pass.
Trail
- Transition: 2×2 behind the on-ball matchup; stay connected in the backcourt; monitor game and shot clocks.
- Setup: Dependable spot near the 28' mark; sideline-oriented; see your matchup and as many other players as possible.
- Rotation (3-person): Eyes follow feet; fill center quickly; cover where lead cannot.
- Primary: Avoid stacking ball handler and defender; weak-side rebounding; post curls away from center; illegal screens and pick-and-roll; REPA engagement with primary defender; traveling.
- Eyes: Screening action; go off ball when center/lead accept; find the pivot foot.
